String to SHA-256

Generate the SHA-256 hash of any text instantly. Free online SHA-256 tool, plus when to use it (and when not to).

Paste text and get its SHA-256 digest — a 64-character hex fingerprint used for integrity checks, signatures, and content addressing.

What SHA-256 is good for

SHA-256 has no practical collision attack, so it is the default for verifying file integrity, signing, and deduplication. The same input always yields the same digest; any change produces a completely different one.

Not for passwords

SHA-256 is fast, which is exactly wrong for passwords — attackers can try billions per second. Use a slow, salted KDF (bcrypt, scrypt, Argon2) for password storage instead.

FAQ

Is SHA-256 reversible?›
No — it is one-way. You cannot recover the input from the digest.
Should I hash passwords with SHA-256?›
No. Use a slow salted algorithm like bcrypt or Argon2. Plain SHA-256 is too fast to be safe for passwords.
