How to check my IP through a proxy

Confirm a proxy or VPN is routing your traffic by checking the exit IP. Step-by-step with a free What’s-my-IP tool.

The quickest way to confirm a proxy or VPN is actually working is to check what IP the world sees when you route through it — it should be the proxy’s exit IP, not your own.

Before and after

First check your real public IP with no proxy. Then send the request through the proxy and check again: if the tool now shows the proxy’s exit IP (ideally in the expected country), the proxy is routing your traffic. If it still shows your real IP, the proxy is not being used or is transparent and leaking.

Watch for leaks

Even with a proxy set, DNS or WebRTC can leak your real IP in a browser. Checking the exit IP confirms HTTP traffic is proxied; for full anonymity also verify the anonymity level with a proxy checker.

Step by step

1

Open What’s-my-IP with no proxy and note your real public IP.

2

Configure your client or browser to use the proxy.

3

Reload the tool through the proxy — the IP should change to the exit node.

4

If it still shows your real IP, the proxy is not applied or is transparent; check it with the proxy checker.

FAQ

The IP did not change — why?›
The proxy is not actually being used, or it is transparent and forwarding your real IP. Verify the config and the proxy’s anonymity level.
Does this prove I am fully anonymous?›
It confirms HTTP traffic is proxied. DNS/WebRTC can still leak in browsers, so check those separately for full anonymity.
