What is a toll-free number?

A toll-free number is billed to the business, not the caller — like US 800/888 numbers. Learn how they work and detect a number’s type free.

A toll-free number lets people call a business without paying for the call — the receiving business pays instead. In the US these are the familiar 800, 888, 877, and similar prefixes; other countries have their own toll-free ranges.

Who pays

Normally the caller pays for a long-distance call. With a toll-free number the charge is reversed to the number’s owner, which is why businesses use them for customer support — it removes a barrier to calling. They are a distinct line type from regular geographic numbers.

Detecting the type

Line-type detection classifies a number as mobile, landline, VoIP, toll-free, premium-rate, and more. Knowing the type matters: a toll-free or premium-rate number behaves differently from a normal mobile for verification and cost.
