The target site — or an anti-bot layer wearing its clothes.
503 — Service Unavailable
Officially, the server is overloaded or in maintenance. In scraping it is very often a bot challenge returned with a 503 status, which is why the body matters more than the code.
A proxy fixes part of this. A 503 that is really a challenge responds to residential IPs. A 503 that is really an outage responds to nothing but waiting, and the body is what tells the two apart.
Why it happens
Genuine overload or a deploy in progress.
Cloudflare's interstitial challenge, historically served as 503 before it moved to 403.
The site sheds anonymous traffic under load and keeps serving logged-in users.
How to fix it
- Look at the body for a challenge script or a CDN name before treating it as an outage.
- Back off exponentially — hammering a 503 is how a temporary shed becomes a ban.
- If the body is a challenge, the fix is the challenge, not the retry: better IP reputation and a real browser fingerprint.
