What is a public IP address?

A public IP is the internet-facing address the world sees; a private IP is local to your network. Learn the difference and find yours free.

A public IP address is the internet-routable address assigned to your connection — the one every website, API, and server you contact sees. It is distinct from the private IP your device uses inside your own network.

Public vs private

Your router has one public IP from your ISP, shared by everything behind it via NAT. Each device gets a private IP (like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x) that only exists on your local network and is not reachable from the internet. Sites only ever see the public IP.

What a public IP reveals

It geolocates roughly to a city and identifies your ISP — but not your name or exact address. Behind a VPN or proxy, the public IP the world sees is the exit node’s, not yours, which is the whole point of using one.
