The target site, or a proxy or CDN in front of it.

413 — Payload Too Large

The request body exceeds a limit. Worth knowing which layer set it: nginx defaults to 1 MB, Cloudflare caps free plans at 100 MB, and the application may have its own smaller limit inside both.

A proxy does not fix this. A size limit is about the bytes, not about where they came from.

Why it happens

An upload larger than the server accepts.

A CDN limit hit before the origin ever sees the request.

Cookies and headers grown large enough to trip a header-size limit reported as 413.

How to fix it

  1. Split the upload, or use whatever chunked or resumable endpoint the API offers.
  2. Compress the body where the server accepts it.
  3. If the limit is a CDN's, no change on the origin side will help — the request stops earlier than that.
