ISO 8601 is the international standard for writing dates and times in a way that sorts correctly and is unambiguous everywhere: year-month-day, a T separator, then the time, like 2026-07-16T10:00:00Z.

Why it beats other formats

Writing 07/08/2026 is ambiguous — is it July 8 or August 7? ISO 8601 always goes big-to-small (YYYY-MM-DD), so it is unambiguous and, as a bonus, sorts chronologically as plain text. This is why APIs, logs, and databases prefer it for human-readable timestamps.

The Z and offsets

A trailing Z means UTC ("Zulu"). Otherwise a time carries an offset like +02:00. Combined with the fixed field order, this makes an ISO 8601 timestamp fully self-describing — no guessing the timezone.

FAQ

What does the Z mean in ISO 8601?›
It marks UTC (zero offset). A time without Z should include an explicit offset like +02:00.
Is ISO 8601 the same as a Unix timestamp?›
No — ISO 8601 is a human-readable string; a Unix timestamp is a number of seconds. Our converter turns one into the other.
