HOW-TO

How to validate a phone number

Validate a phone number’s format, line type (mobile/VoIP), and region. Step-by-step, plus a free validator that returns E.164 and carrier.

Validating a phone number means checking that it is well-formed, working out where it is from, and — often most importantly — whether it is a mobile or a VoIP line. Here is how to do all three.

Format vs line type

Format validation confirms the digits could be a real number for some country and normalizes them to E.164. Line-type detection goes further, classifying the number as mobile, landline, or VoIP using numbering-plan and carrier data. For sign-up verification you often care specifically that a number is a real mobile (non-VoIP).

Doing it at scale

For one-off checks the free validator is enough. If you need to verify or receive OTPs on real numbers programmatically — across 190+ countries — that is what the Eveses number API is for, with an API key and no captcha.

Step by step

1

Enter the number in E.164 (+countrycode…) or add a country hint for local formats.

2

Run the validator to get valid/possible, the line type, region, and carrier.

3

Copy the normalized E.164 form for storing or sending to an API.

4

If you need a real (non-VoIP) mobile to receive an OTP, use the number catalog’s non-VoIP filter.
