Base64 encode
Encode text to Base64 instantly in your browser. Free, no signup — plus what Base64 is and when to use it.
Paste text and get its Base64 encoding instantly. Base64 makes data safe for text-only transports like JSON, headers, data URLs, and email — it is encoding, not encryption.
When to Base64-encode
Encode when binary or arbitrary text must pass through a channel that only handles ASCII: embedding an image in a data URL, putting credentials in a Basic Auth header, or including a payload in JSON. It is not a security measure — the output is trivially decoded.
Standard vs URL-safe
Standard Base64 uses + and /, which are unsafe in URLs. If the output goes into a URL or a JWT, use the URL-safe variant that substitutes - and _ and usually drops padding.
