What is a data URI?

A data URI embeds a file inline in a URL, often Base64-encoded, instead of linking to it. Learn the format and encode/decode Base64 free.

A data URI (data URL) embeds a small file directly inside a URL rather than pointing to a separate resource. It is how you inline an image, font, or snippet into HTML, CSS, or JSON without a second HTTP request.

The format

A data URI looks like data:[mediatype][;base64],<data> — for example data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgo…. The media type declares what the data is; the optional ;base64 says the payload is Base64-encoded (needed for binary like images). Without it, the data is percent-encoded text.

When to use one

Inlining saves a request, which helps for tiny, rarely-changing assets like icons. The trade-offs: Base64 inflates size by ~33%, the asset cannot be cached separately, and large data URIs bloat the document. Use them for small things; link normally for big ones.
