HOW-TO

How to look up a phone number’s carrier

Find a phone number’s carrier, region, and line type. Step-by-step, plus what number portability means for accuracy.

Looking up a phone number can reveal its region, likely carrier, and line type — useful context before you call, text, or verify it. Here is how, and why carrier data is a best-effort hint.

What a lookup returns

From a number, a lookup derives the country and region from the numbering plan, the line type (mobile, landline, VoIP), and — where data exists — the carrier. Enter the number in E.164, or add a country hint for local formats, and the validator returns these fields.

Number portability caveat

People keep their number when switching carriers (portability), so the "original" carrier from the numbering block may no longer be the real one. Treat carrier as a strong hint, not a guarantee; region and line type are more reliable.

Step by step

1

Enter the number in E.164 (or add a country hint) into the phone validator.

2

Read the region, line type, and carrier where available.

3

Use E.164 output for storing or passing to an API.

4

Remember carrier can be stale due to number portability.

FAQ

Is carrier lookup always accurate?›
It is a best-effort hint. Number portability means the block’s original carrier may differ from the current one.
Can I look up region and line type too?›
Yes — the validator returns region and line type alongside carrier.
